My Favorite American Shad Lures/Jigs

I want to briefly review some of the lures/jigs I've been using so far to catch American Shad and provide recommendations in order of preference. So far I've caught 5 American Shad this year, from 12" to 17 1/2". Four of them were caught on the Arkie Twirl Tail jig, with one more caught on a Crappie Thunder. I haven't had much luck with the spoons yet, but there were alot of reports that the gold spoon has caught several shad early in the season. So I will put spoons at the bottom of the list right now. The shad darts are another lure I have tried, but only managed to catch a little largemouth bass. By the end of the shad run, I should have a pretty good idea of what produces and what doesn't. As of right now, the best colors to use are pink and yellow. Anything small with those two colors should work well.

1. Arkie Rigged Twirl Tail 1/32 oz (Pink jighead / Yellow Glow body)
2. Road Runner Crappie Thunder 1/16 oz (Electric Chicken)
3. Nungesser Shad Darts (various colors)
4. Nungesser 1" Spoons (gold or silver)

January 28 report: I fished Mullet Lake Park again today and caught another 16" American Shad. This time it was on the Road Runner Crappie Thunder in Electric Chicken color. Unfortunately that was the only fish I caught today. Here's a photo of today's 16" shad with my new net. =)
