Last night the moon was around 95% full. It was a stormy night from Altamonte Springs to Oviedo area but I noticed the storm was headed south-southeast. I saw a good opportunity to get some fishing done at CS Lee Park since the storms were avoiding that area completely. With two poles, one with nightcrawlers and one with cut bait, I was targeting small and large fish. I first caught a small catfish about 12" long using a nightcrawler and size 2 hook. Then my other pole caught a florida gar using a dead shiner and size 3/0 hook. All of my hooks are the Owners Mutu Light style, extremely sharp and very effective hook set ratio.
Later in the evening Kyle and Tara came out to join me by the bank while the fish were still biting. Tara came out with two Florida Gars using dead shiners. I also caught another Channel Catfish, this one was a bigger 2 lb 5 oz using nightcrawlers again with the smaller size 2 hook. It was around 3am and we called it a night, the mosquitos were getting bad and the fish were not as active. The two catfish I took home on ice.

Brad, those catfish look great, Ive been searching for a new place to catch catfish, found two but one you can only fish until dark, its the park in Winter Springs, where the baseball diamonds are, theres a trail that leads down to Lake Jessup, took the kids and we were catching big Bluegill and small catfish, but only been fishing with worms.
ReplyDeleteThe other park is also on Lake Jessup, its on 419 going towards Oviedo, just before you get to the Hess gas station, its on Spring Ave, follow it to the end and the park is on your left, big dock and also beach you can fish on, fish is plentiful, alot of talapia and big bluegill and you can fish at night for catfish.
I know you like the South Causeway but if your ever in the Cocoa area, try the Ports End Park near the Lock and Damn in Port Canaveral, its a nice fishing park with restrooms, pavillion, picnic tables, fish underneath or on the side of the bridge. Have been there twice and saw a big snook being pulled from there along with redfish and snapper, guy there yesterday said he was catching Jac's on Sunday.
Hey Anthony, thanks for writing. CS Lee Park is a pretty nice area with a long stretch of bank to fish. We only caught gar so far with cut bait, so using worms is probably best option there. Hey that bigger catfish in the picture above, is that a White Catfish? I noticed it doesn't have a deep fork in the tail as most channel cats do.
ReplyDeleteI want to try Hatbill Park someday, thats another one of those sunrise to sunset parks. I hear there's miles and miles of bank fishing there. Also you might want to checkout the SR 44 bridge where it crosses over the St Johns river in West Deland, there's a 30 foot hole on the north side. Park hours are sunrise to sunset for that one too.
I really miss catching those jacks, they were alot of fun when the bite was on in New Smyrna. They just haven't been as active the last couple of weeks in the morning, the tides and fast moving current probably have something to do with it.
Brad, im thinking that its still a channel cat but its a hybrid, crossed with another species of cat. Thanks for the info on the other parks, I will be trying them out in the new future. The park on 419/434 on Spring Ave. is called Overlook park. Still need to get you out and surf fish, you will be addicted.
