CNS #3 - Personal Best 15" Whiting

Headed out to the Canaveral Seashore this morning, my buddy Kyle was about to see first hand what surf fishing was all about. We arrived around 11am and found a good spot on the beach to setup shop. I set him up with one of my homemade double hook pompano rigs and we both were catching whiting. With every cast getting a good hit or two, it was fun trying to hook up some whiting. We were using small pieces of Fishbites E-Z Shrimp with a small piece of fresh dead shrimp. The Fishbites seems to really help and it has a slow release scent so it lasts a really long time in the water. Plus it stays on the hook extremely well. Even when a fish steals your shrimp, you still have the fishbites on your hook and the whiting don't seem to care.

It was around noon when I hooked a really nice Gulf Kingfish (Whiting) that was 15" long. It's the biggest whiting I've caught so far. Kyle and I both caught alot of good keeper sized whiting too. All together we must have caught about 12 whiting in about 2 hours. I took home 8 in the cooler and cleaned them for dinner. I think we're planning on another trip on Thursday so I'll have another report soon. Hopefully we can catch some shark or pompano but as long as we're catching, I'm not complaining.

  1. Very nice Brad, the whiting looks good especially the big one. At CNS #3 if you catch it at low tide, you can stand on the second sand bar and cast out and thats where the big fish are at, hoping you son likes it, its a blast fishing and spending time with your children, especially when they love to fish also, my daughter was down for the summer and we introduced her to surf fishing and she was a pro by the time she left, she would even take off the sharks by herself. Keep up the good work

  2. Good tip on the 2nd sand bar, I did see alot of people standing out there fishing. Couple questions for you since your more experienced at this than me. What size hook do u use for sharks? We don't care if they are small, me and my friend just want to catch a shark. Also have you ever tried live finger mullet while surf fishing the bottom? If so any good hits or fish caught? thanks for writing!

  3. Brad no problem, Im still learning too so whatever I learn I will gladly pass it on. Ive been using #2 and #3 Mustad Ultra Point circles and for the sharks Ive been using #2 Mustad Ultra point Big Gun but have had a few get off lately during the fight so Im going to try #6 Circle. I usually put two rods out with the pomp rigs and one rod for anything else, been trying for reds or bluefish but its all been sharks. I have only used live mullet once, no luck. I either use cut mullet or fresh ladyfish, ladyfish works the best. Ive been reading alot about using blue crabs for sharks, I thought you just used them reds but sharks love them too. Also I make my own pomp rigs too but I use a little floater just past the bead, it helps keep the bait off the bottom so crabs dont eat your bait
